The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Tuesday said it was not in the purview of the National Universities Commission and other tertiary institutions regulatory agencies to shut schools to allow students in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education to vote during the forthcoming elections.
The Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Dr Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, said lack of transparency on the part of the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities made the Federal Government register rival trade unions in the university system.
The ASUU chairman, who spoke in Ado Ekiti after the congress of the union, said the lecturers had given the state government till January 17 to bring together critical stakeholders “to sit down, discuss, and tell us how they will defray what we are owed” to avert a strike.
The ASUU leader explained then that the lecturers are only remaining in the classrooms in spite of the unfavorable treatment from the government as a sacrifice for the sake of students and parents as well as the country at large.
